Halloween in Limerick
With Halloween a young boy was engrossed,
though his family had less dough than most.
With scissors he neatly
cut holes in a sheet
then paraded around as a ghost.
His sister had hair like ripe citrus,
and wanted to dress like a princess.
The precocious youth
had a waggling tooth
Like a marshmallow bobbing in Swiss Miss.
With his daughter sporting a crowned head,
and his son hiding inside a bedspread,
the dad went buck wild
with green make-up and styled
himself like a zombie from Walking Dead.
Now Mom thought Halloween was a niche
that forced mothers to dress up like a witch.
She eschewed the costume
but dad said, “With a broom
you’d fly around anyway without a hitch.”
The kids knocked on all doors with glee
even the old lady next door who was crazy.
She gave them an apple
and told them, “Be grateful!”
They were, showing her bags full of candy.
At last, trick or treating was finished,
and the kids acted like they were famished!
Mom and Dad scrutinized
each piece to certify
their kids had safe candy to make vanish.
